According to Google, 97% of people use the web to search for local businesses, venues and events – and if the vast majority of your potential visitors are online, you should be too. Having a strong online presence is a crucial component for any table tennis club that wishes to attract visitors or new members. Having some sort of web presence helps visitors or viewers better understand what’s great about your club, why they should be a part of it and where it can be found.
So here are 5 tips to help when building your online presence:

1. A website
A website is important because it helps to reinforce your brand.  Your website should be created with your club’s purpose in mind.  It should be user friendly and responsive (easily viewed from mobile phones, tablets and computers).  It’s also imperative that your site contains vital information about your club.  Here is some key information your website should have:
– Club name
– Address
– Telephone number/ email
– Hours of operation
– Cost to play (if any)
– Special activity offered. (Coaching, leagues)

2. Search engine optimization (SEO)
Once you have a website, it’s important that it can actually be found by search engines, as this will help visitors get to it.   After all, 89 % of consumers use search engines to research a product, service or business before making a decision.  SEO refers to the method used by search engines like Google and Bing to present webpages to people searching for information on the Internet.  It does not have to be elaborate:  using relevant keywords and adding photos and videos to your website will greatly help to achieve good results in search engines.

3. Social media
Social media is an important part of your online presence and it can help improve your chances of generating customer loyalty and even assist in generating revenue. It allows potential customers/visitors and other interested parties to engage easily via a channel that plays an important role in their everyday lives.  Although not every social media channel will be relevant for your table tennis club, Facebook, Twitter and Instagram do a good job for almost any type of business.

4. Market your brand
Marketing is necessary for every successful enterprise.  Simply put, this involves figuring out how you are going to inform people of what you have to offer.  Although it can be very expensive, there are definitely ways to market your page, club or website without breaking the bank.  Depending on your niche you can devise a marketing strategy to fit your budget and needs.  First you need to identify your target group and subgroups:  this means the group of people you think would be most interested in your club.  Once this is done, you can start putting together a plan for the best ways to reach them.

– Use your current membership or visitor list to identify the groups of people you already have at your club.

5. Set goals and track results
Once you have an online presence it’s important that you set some goals for your club.  This could be as simple getting 2 new members per week or even 10 new visitors per month.  A realistic goal can be based on prior membership or visitor’s information.  It’s important that you monitor and track your results to learn if what you are doing is working for you.  Consider what types of posts and promotions people are responding to.  It may take a bit of trial-and-error to figure out exactly what works for your club but once you see the trend then just stick to it.  There are server free tools available online to help with tracking how your site or social media pages are doing in terms of followers, content likes and website visits. Most social media sites offer their own tools to do such a thing.  Facebook and Instagram, to name a few, offer analytics for pages.
Google Analytics is a great (and free!) tool for websites . This is an excellent starting point for tracking page views, referral traffic, bounce rates, and overall traffic. All of this information can be used to validate what you’re doing right (or wrong) and make changes as needed.
